Coating Thickness Gauges & Probes

A coating thickness gauge — also known as a dry film thickness (DFT) gauge or paint thickness meter — measures the thickness of paint, galvanic, powder and other coatings without damaging the surface. NDT1 Kraft manufactures the K6-C and K5-C multifunctional coating thickness gauges together with a full range of interchangeable probes for ferrous and non-ferrous substrates.

    Our gauges combine three non-destructive measurement methods. The magneto-inductive method measures non-magnetic coatings (paint, zinc, chrome, powder, enamel) on steel and other ferromagnetic substrates. The eddy-current method measures dielectric coatings (anodic oxide, paint, lacquer) on non-ferrous metals such as aluminium and copper. The phase eddy-current method measures galvanic coatings — for example nickel on steel, or zinc thickness under a separate layer of paint. Dedicated, specialised probes are available for each method and application.

    Typical applications include protective and decorative paint inspection, hot-dip and electroplated galvanizing, powder coating, anodizing, printed-circuit-board copper, and concrete cover with rebar location. The K6-C additionally measures groove depth, surface roughness after blasting, and climatic parameters — air and surface temperature, humidity, dew point and the TΔ value — for complete surface-preparation control before painting.

    Measurements conform to international standards such as ISO 2178, ISO 2360 and ISO 2808. Every gauge is supplied with calibration foils and reference specimens.

    Ferrous or non-ferrous — how do I choose a probe?

    Use a magneto-inductive (F-series) probe for non-magnetic coatings on steel and other ferromagnetic substrates, and an eddy-current (NF-series) probe for dielectric coatings on non-ferrous metals such as aluminium or copper. Phase eddy-current (PH-series) probes are used for galvanic coatings on steel.

    Which standards apply to coating thickness measurement?

    The most common are ISO 2178 (magnetic method), ISO 2360 (eddy-current method) and ISO 2808 (general coating thickness methods).

    Can I measure zinc coating thickness under paint?

    Yes. A phase eddy-current probe (PH-series) measures a galvanic layer such as zinc separately from the paint layer above it.

    Do the gauges measure on both ferrous and non-ferrous metals?

    Yes. With the right probe the K6-C and K5-C measure coatings on both ferromagnetic (steel) and non-ferromagnetic (aluminium, copper) substrates.
