Gloss Meters

A gloss meter measures the specular gloss of a surface — how much light it reflects — expressed in gloss units (GU). NDT1 Kraft manufactures the FB gloss meter for paint, coatings, plastics and other finished surfaces.

Gloss is measured at standard geometries: 60° for most coatings, 20° for high-gloss finishes and 85° for matt and low-gloss surfaces. Consistent gloss readings are a core part of paint and coating quality control, helping verify appearance, batch-to-batch consistency and surface preparation.

Measurements conform to ISO 2813 and ASTM D523. Typical applications include automotive and industrial paint, powder coating, furniture, plastics and printing.

    FAQ

Which angle or geometry should I use?

60° is the general-purpose geometry; switch to 20° for high-gloss surfaces and 85° for matt/low-gloss surfaces.

    What are gloss units (GU)?

Gloss units are a standardised scale referenced to a polished black glass standard; higher GU means a more reflective, glossier surface.

Which standards apply to gloss measurement?

ISO 2813 and ASTM D523 are the most widely used.
